Our experience with Cat Litter is that the non-clay, Corncob, Pine, Wheat, or Paper based Litters are healthier for your Kitten or Cat and that these types function better than clay based Litter. There
are many types and brands of non-clay cat litter available and you, and
your Kitten, may prefer a different type than what our Cattery uses.
We use a litter by "Nature's Miracle" for the Kittens and Cats in our home. This is a wheat and pine based clumping Cat Litter. It is 99.9% dust free, hard clumping, pleasantly pine scented, and safe for Kittens and Cats. This product is also lighter than clay litters (therefore, easier on your back!) and environmentally friendly.
CAT HEALTH ALERT
The dust in clay based litters is very hazardous for all Kittens and Cats. As they dig to cover their excrement and raise the fine dust, they breath it into their lungs -- this can cause respiratory distress syndrome. Also, when they exit their litter box and "wash up," the dust is then ingested and can cause severe intestinal problems and sometimes, especially in Kittens, death. Please do NOT use clay-based Cat Litters.
Pellet Pine litter also works well, however, it does not clump, but
turns to fine particles when soiled with urine, then the particles fall through the specially designed inner grid to the bottom pan of the litter box. This "dust" is easily removed by simply pouring the soiled litter dust out of the box to the trash or compost bin.
The solids are easily removed by a specially designed litter scoop that sifts out the excrement and lets the still usable pellets stay in the litter box. The special litter box and scoop can be purchased from "Feline Pine" - just call the 800 number on the bag of litter. Alternately, the soiled litter dust and excrement can be scooped out with a 6 inch flat Spackle blade.
Pellet litter does not function in the automatic litter boxes, because
it does not clump. We use the pellet litter in our "Cat House," where
our boys reside.
